I am the sole proprietor of a very small functional pottery business. I make, trim, glaze, and fire all my own work. My pots are all either wheel thrown or hand built, mostly all altered in some way, are typically fired either in a wood or soda kiln. Most pots are not glazed on the exterior so the effects of the flame or the soda vapors are evident on the bare clay. All work is made and fired at Baltimore Clayworks in Mt. Washington.
Functional ceramics is a special body of work. No other medium establishes such an intimate bond between the artist and the user. You hold the mug in your hands; it warms you, and you take it to your lips. You take your nourishment from the bowl and the plate. The energy and the spirit of its making moves to you. These vessels are not yet done. They are not complete until filled, and shared.
I strive to make honest pots. Pots that reflect honest food, shared with family and friends. Pots you always reach for and can't let go of. Pots that function just as you want them to.
